I almost “demoted” it because it is a bit indulgent, but when I listened to it again I realized I like some indulgence! It is really is a great recording.
Very complete survey, almost all the great versions are here. In my opinion there are two great omission: Gendron/Haitink (one of the best) and Helmerson/Jarvi, a sleeper but a great one too. Please John, try to listen and let me know what you think
Thank you! I love Gendron on that recording, but I feel like he is let down a bit by Haitink. Just my view, but I will go back and listen again. The Helmerson I had at 3/5 stars on my own rating sheet, but I will also again. I rarely get tired of listening to this concerto.
The Rostropovich/Karajan has always been my favorite. I've been listening to it since college (mid 80's). Great post, as always!
