Hello again, I wanted to reply to you regarding the Abbado New World recording. You used the word affectionate to describe it, and I think that is a good word for it. For me it lacks enough excitement and energy, but there is no doubt it is well played. The horns in the third movement are much too far back in the balance to be heard well, similar to some of Karajan’s recordings from the Philharmonie in Berlin. Just my thoughts. Hope all is well with you.

Mr Buxton, could you tell me your thoughts on the Abbado/Berlin recording of Dvorak New World? It's an affectionate and detailed performance, but it has been unfairly slighted.

I saw Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic years ago in Boston USA and it was an unforgettable concert. I know I listened to their New World when I was surveying recordings for that post, but I will listen to it again. I admire Abbado as a conductor.
