#5: Sir John Barbirolli

________________

Welcome back to the Top 75 Conductors, and at #5 we arrive at the British conductor (and cellist) Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970). Barbirolli is probably best known for rehabilitating the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, England and leading the orchestra from 1943 until his death. Barbirolli also served as director of the New York Philharmonic from 1936-1943, taking the position after Arturo Toscanini stepped down. Barbirolli left us a large number of recordings as well where we can still appreciate his artistry.
