You could say I have a unfair bias against Sir Simon Rattle. I’m not sure why exactly, as it is not rational. Maybe because he was celebrated as a wunderkind in his youth, and I’m not sure it was entirely warranted. But at this point there is no excuse for holding on to a silly bias in the face of objective achievement. More to the point is Sir Simon’s 2024 recording (released January 2025) of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 7 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on the BR-Klassik label, a performance of distinction and grandeur captured in stunning sound quality.
