We will begin with the 50 greatest classical recordings of all time. This is a highly subjective list of course because it is the 50 most essential recordings in my opinion. Some of the recordings are legendary recordings by consensus, while others are recordings that have special meaning to me personally or have distinctive qualities that I believe deserve acclaim.
The list will be revealed as we progress. The number on the list is not intended to indicate a ranking, in other words all 50 recordings are right at the top and may even be considered “desert island” recordings. Naturally you may not share my enthusiasm for particular recordings or pieces, but these recordings at least deserve a hearing.
Some of the pieces may be familiar to you, while others may be new for you. My hope is you will give a listen and decide for yourself what you like and what you don’t; in that way you will develop a discerning ear for what kind of music or performance brings you pleasure or joy.
Also I’ve tried to include a variety of composers, orchestral, chamber, choral, and solo works and to especially highlight pieces that should be a part of any listener’s collection.
Next time: #1 on the list!
